Question
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT TWO: ONE-TAILED OR TWO? For each of the following hypotheses, identify if the researcher will have to conduct a one-tailed test or a two-tailed test. If they will have to conduct a one-tailed test, indicate whether the expectation is that the outcome will be a positive or negative correlation. If they will have to conduct a two-tailed test, simply mark "N/A" (not applicable) in the column "DIRECTION." EXTRA CREDIT! Choose one of the hypotheses and give a brief explanation as to why you think that it might be correct. You will have to back up your answer with REAL data and cite the source. We do a two tailed test, when the variation is in either direction or no variation at all. If we are testing a variation in only one direction, then we conduct one tailed test.
1) Cats are more loyal to owners than dogs
It is a one tailed test in positive direction as we are testing that cats are more loyal than dogs.
2) The NE Patriots play different offense than the NY jets.
Here different can be in either direction. So, it is a two tailed test.
3) Children watch fewer hours of television than adults
Here, were testing only one direction i.e. fewer hours of television than adults. So, it is a one tailed test in negative direction.
4) It costs more money to fly to Hawaii than to Europe.
Here we are testing only one direction i.e. more money than Europe. So, it is a one tailed test in positive direction.
5) There is a relationship between the number of calories consumed in a day and number of hours binge watching shows on Netflix.
There is no direction defined. Hence, it would be a two tailed test.
6) People are less likely to commit a crime if they have a college degree.
It is a one tailed test in negative direction as we are testing in one direction.
7) The taller a person is, the greater chance of hitting head on low ceilings.
It is a one tailed test in positive direction.
8) It is a one tailed test in negative direction.
9) It is a two tailed test.
10) It is a one tailed test in positive direction.
