Question

1. Along 14 separate sections of highway measurements of trafficvolume (x) and rate of
accidents (y) were taken.
x 303 294 242 236 267 213 233 292 287 215 231 195 255 298
y 30 27 23 20 26 20 22 29 27 20 23 20 26 27
(a) Sketch a scatter plot of the data with accident rate onthe vertical axis.
(b) Calculate the coeficient of correlation between traffic volumeand accident rate.
(c) Find the fitted linear regression of accident rate on trafficvolume and
draw this line on the scatter plot.
(d) Obtain residuals and sketch a residual plot (residuals againsttraffic
volume). Explain what the plot tells us about the t of theregression.
(e) Use the regression line to predict the accident rate for asimilar section
of highway where the traffic volume is 300.

Explanation / Answer

a. To make a scatter plot, just take each value of x and itscorresponding y and plot them just like they're ordered pairs(x,y) b. r = 0.9424 c. y = 0.5096 + 0.0934x _ These are the first three answers. This is a difficultproblem to describe since most of it is plotting stuff. Ihope it at least gets you started. I got these from a graphing calculator, by the way.
