Question

3) Surprising Exoplanet Discoveries The nebular hypothesis, developed to explain the formation of planets, was originally based only on observations of our own solar system. With the confirmed detections of more than 3,000 exoplanets, some surprising trends have emerged that force us to modify the original nebular hypothesis a) Many of the first exoplanets discovered were "Hot Jupiters". These are Jovian planets that are so close to their parent star that they complete an orbit once every few days. Why was this discovery unexpected? How do you think these Jovians ended up so close to their host star? b) Many exoplanets have very high eccentricities, much larger than that of Mercury (e 0.21) which has the highest eccentricity of any planet in our solar system. Why was this discovery unexpected? How do you think these planets ended up on such non-circular orbits? c) Many exoplanets have been found that fall into the category of "Super Earths" or "Mini Neptunes". They have masses between roughly 2 - 10 times that of Earth, and diameters between roughly 1.25- 3.5 times that of Earth. (For comparison, Neptune is 17 times the mass of Earth and 4 times the diameter of Earth.) Why was this discovery unexpected? How do you think these planets formed?

Explanation / Answer

A- The jovian planet like Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,Neptune are very close to their host star or parent star because of strong gravitational interaction with star that drove them inward from a more distant orbit.

This discovery was unexpected because in the orbit there is not enough material to form planet of that size.

As per my knowledge, there is a complicated interaction within a solar system, will all the planet affecting each others orbit and near by star also influence the solar system.these planets are crossing each others orbit at high speed - migrating inward towards the parent star.

B-

This discovey was unexpected because all the planet revolving around its star which is more heavy and dense from it and revolving in a perfect constant speed and distance may vary a few distance at apehelion and perihelion so the orbit would be circular or elliptical which has eccentricity 0-1 but not above it.

As I previously discussed at perihelion and aphelion the planet revolving in large and small distance so it has non circularorbit but likewise elliptical.

C-

This discovery was unexpected because exoplanet have formed by the two mechanism disk instability model and core accretion model and the planet are giant gas like planet but they are not like super earth type planet .

The birth of exoplanet is within the predominantly gaseous disk which surrounds protostar and two mechanism were effect here as I previously mentioned.
