The following data are the numbers of pounds lost for 14 people, based on means and standard deviations given in the article. Assume the population is approximately normal. Perform a hypothesis test to determine whether the mean weight loss is greater than 20 pounds. Use thea -0.10 level of significance and the P -value method with the table. Below are the null and alternate hypothesis
H0: mu = 20
Ha: mu > 20
This is right tailed t - test
Critical value of test statistic is 1.3502
Here, n = 14 , xbar = 22.7786 , mu = 20 and s = 8.9779
Test statistic,
t = (xbar - mu)/(s/sqrt(n))
t = (22.7786 - 20)/(8.9779/(sqrt(14))
t = 1.158
p-value = 0.1338
As p-value is not less than the significance level, we fail to reject the null hypothesis.
