Question

Landslides are caused if the slope is too steep to support the weight of the land. Some of the factors that make landslides more likely include the following steep surfaces water in the ground (it adds weight and decreases friction) lack of vegetation (roots stabilize the ground and remove water) planes of weakness in rock to allow sliding movement (such as parallel sedimentary layers, especially layers that include clay minerals) . Put an X next to the situations below that make landslides more likely. A hurricane saturates the ground with water. A wild fire burns plants and trees in the mountains. Plate tectonics cause mountains to get steeper over time. People water yards, causing water to soak into the ground Check your answers with another group. In Questions 2-6, determine which house would be least likely to be destroyed by a landslide. 8 2. In which house would you prefer to live? A or Exan Metamorphic rock Sedimentary rock 3 In which house would you prefer to live C or D Explain

Explanation / Answer

1) A hurricane saturates the ground with water.

excess water in the soil add weight and reduce the frictional force between the beds, especially when the sloped areas get saturated with water, lack of friction and weight leads to the sliding of uppper layers.

2) House B

one of the important factor that control the land slide is vegetation. because, vegetation regulates the water content through transpiration, plants and trees take water and evaporates through leaves, stem and flowers, this reduction in water content in soil will increase the stability. the roots of the plant makes a solid connction between unstable upper layer and stable lower layers, this will prevent the immediate land slide. since the House located in sedimentary layered region which would have a chance of land slide, House B is more safe due to the vegetation.

3)House C

the boundary between two different rock types or beds represent a potential slip plane that can cause a land slide. the region of House C represents a uniform metamorphic rock which do not have a layered structure,(it does not mean that weathered rocks are stable ) compare to the sedimentary slope with layers. so the most stable region in this scenario is House C. the presence of excess water can affect the stability of region D, and the house is located along the slope which is more liable to landslide. so the basement with metamorphic rock is more stable
