SEDIMENT can be defined as small solid piece of material that comes out basically from rock. Most of the Sedimentary rocks are formed through processes like erosion, weathering and deposition.

1. ORGANIC SEDIMENTARY ROCKS are not made of minerals, because in general minerals are inorganic. Organic sedimentary rocks are formed from the remains of once-living plants and animals.

2. The best example of organic sedimentary rock is COAL.

3. COAL is black carbon rich material, which is a mixture of organic chemical substances which do contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Coal is further classified into four types namely Lignite, bituminous, sub bituminous and anthracite.

4. COAL is formed from the environment where the accumulation of plant/animal debris takes place. That particular environment where debris gets accumulated is referred as PEAT. This peat undergoes several changes and altered both physically and chemically by a process known as COALIFICATION. The accumulated material cannot decompose and is basically rich in carbon, thus formed as coal. In short the physical and chemical changes in the vegetation will be transformed into PEAT and then into COAL.

5. Coal is an important organic sedimentary rock because it is used as a primary fuel source. In fact COAL is united states most abundant energy source. Still even today coal is an important fuel for generating electricity.
