Question
What is the expected atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (ppm) in 2050 if we follow "business-as-usual" fossil fuel consumption? How much carbon (in gigatonnes) will need to be removed from the atmosphere to reach a concentration of 350 ppm after 2050? Hint: 1 ppm atmospheric carbon dioxide 2. 12 gigatonnes of carbon in the atmosphere. Please type your answers out in the following format: Atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide in 2050 XXX ppm Amount of carbon to be removed after 2050 to return to 350 ppm atmospheric carbon dioxide YYY gigatonnes of carbon Although showing your work is not required, uploading a work document may help you earn partial credit if any mistakes are made.Explanation / Answer
1
the expexted atmospheric concentration of carbon di oxide in 2050 is lamost 550 ppm . the co2 will be doubled from today concentration as it is increasing exponentially.
2
the amount of carbon is to be removed from the atmosphere to reach 350 ppm is
1 ppm co2 = 2.12 gigaton carbon
in 2050 the co2 concentration will be 550 we have to decrease 200ppm of co2 so
200ppm co2 = 2.12*200 gigaton 424 gigaton
we have to remove 424 gigaton carbon from the atmosphere
