Question

You have been given the questions ahead of time so that you can carefully plan your answers.

You will need to carefully craft an answer to EACH of the following questions:

What is your opinion on jobs vs the environment?

What limits do you set to allow for economic growth with the least environmental impact?

What ethical issues does this involve?

As a regulatory official, what kind of information would you need to determine if a chemical is “safe”?

Not using this chemical is not an option. How can you handle this?

How would you address the potential threat to the air, water, land, or human health?

What level of risk would you find acceptable for society? Why?

Nuclear power is one of the world largest energy producers. In light of the recent nuclear accidents in Japan and a growing demand for energy, does it concern you that nuclear power is one of the most abundant sources of potential for energy growth?

What types of problems does using nuclear power present?

What will you tell the people about the safety of nuclear power?

What types of renewable energy could be a viable alternative?

How could both nuclear energy and renewable energy impact the threat of climate change? Explain your ideas.

The Amazon Basin contains some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. The rate of deforestation and habitat destruction remains a threat to the area. Some of this is due to the slash and burn clearing techniques used in the area to create open land for agriculture. What can you say to convince the government in the area that this issue needs to be addressed?

What suggestions will you make regarding the issue?

How will these impact the local people? Each response you prepare must be at least one page double-spaced and must address each aspect of the question.

Your work must include all references consulted or it will not be accepted.

Explanation / Answer

Jobs in the current generation are directly proportional to the degree of degradation of the environment. It is evident from the rapid growth that humanity has made since the 1950s. The growth can be seen mostly in urbanized setups. The natural resources are being exploited to create jobs at the expense of the environment. This situation can be brought to some control by setting limits on the cutting of trees. If a contractor is responsible for chopping off trees in a rural, forest-based setup, then he must pay back to the villagers so that the local community can grow trees in the deforested lands. So, this approach must be systematically implemented through agreements and should be conceptualized as Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES). PES would drive economic growth as well as maintain the stability of the environment at local, regional and possibly global scales if brought to the attention of communities in every continent.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a chemical can be classified as "safe" if the three-fold information is made available: chemical identity, physical and chemical properties and health effects. As a regulatory official, one needs to

1. find the identity of a chemical through manufacturing records

2. acquire data (related to the chemical) obtained through laboratory tests

3. identify the impacts of the chemical on health through records of national and international agencies

The laws governing the usage of a chemical must be counter-acted upon by a documentation containing sufficient proof of safety standards. Such a report must include the potential threats to

1. air quality (levels of harmful gases in the atmosphere),

2. water quality (concentration of dissolved substances)

3. land-based ecosystems (resiliency of crops, plants, and animals)

4. human health (vulnerability to skin, eye or lung diseases)

Level of risk should be at its minimum for society, for the sake of sustenance of an eco-friendly lifestyle. The risks must not compromise or impact the needs of future generations, so it is important for a regulatory official to maintain the lowest level of risk in terms of air, water, land, and health.

Nuclear power is regarded as a carbon-free energy source, so it is a huge prospect for the energy sector to invest in such a technology. As prospective as it may sound, it comes at the cost of environment and health due to the prolonged toxic presence of radioactive substances in nature. Awareness of nuclear waste disposal is of massive importance as it can be dangerous to leave it out in the open. The vulnerabilities of the waste generated by nuclear power must be known in terms of health hazards to every common man. The types of renewable energy that could be a viable alternative are wind and solar energy. The use of such renewable sources along with nuclear energy would mean a complete decarbonization of the economy and significant reduction of CO2 emissions in the near future. The decision to substantially decrease the burning fossil fuels and increase the use of carbon-free technologies in day-to-day life would act as a huge step towards mitigating the problem of climate change. This calls for taxing the carbonized fuels (coal, oil, gas) in major, developed countries and simultaneously encourage investments in setting up solar panels and wind farms wherever possible.

The Amazon basin faces a threat due to human-induced deforestation. Both the local and national governments must be convinced of the problems that humanity is facing in all continents. The situation must be explained in terms of the impacts that humans are making at local, regional and global scales. Social issues like hunger, poverty need to be addressed as the number of crops that needs to reach every human on this planet are not at all reachable today. Implementation of certain policies like REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) and PES (discussed above) must be done in order to improve the stocks of carbon, and hence the overall quality of life on land. This will engage more people in protecting the land that they must preserve for a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. The nature of jobs will thus be more vibrant as the local communities will be encouraged to actively participate in the process of restoring the balance of the environment through just and effective transactions between the foreigners and the indigenous people.
