Question

DESCRIPTION (Ipt) 7. Like most rivers, the Peace and Athabasca transport sediment. Is the river at the delta bedload dominated, or suspended load dominated? Why? What is your evidence? The Atlas won't have direct information on this so, instead carefully watch the video for evidence, and consider the location of the Delta with respect to the rivers. What is the appearance of the landscape, the steepness of the river, and the appearance of the river water (is it clear or murky)? a) BED LOAD or SUSPENDED LOAD (choose) (Ipt). b) Evidence for your choice (Ipt): c) Identify two factors that influence the type of sediment load in the river at the delta (one hint: consider where the delta is located within the entire drainage system of the Peace) (2pt)

Explanation / Answer

7a) Suspended load

7b) The evidence for this choice are

i)the muddy appearance and brown of the river which indicates that there must be a large number of sediments suspended in the water.

ii) the delta is made at the mature stage of the river where the dominant load type is the suspended load.

7c)The factors that influence the type of sediment load in the river at the delta are

i)the gradient of the river, as a gentler gradient would lead to more suspended load proportions.

ii) distance from the river source, the longer the sediments have traveled from the source the more is the proportion of the suspended load as friction and collision during transportation breaks the larger fragments.
