Question
A. The longer the S- and P-waves travel, the farther apart their wave fronts are in kilometers.
B. The shorter the time interval is between the arrival of the S- and the P-waves, the farther the seismometer is from the epicenter.
C. The smaller the S–P value is, the farther the seismometer is located from the epicenter.
D. The larger the S–P value is, the farther the seismometer is located from the epicenter.
E. The farther the epicenter is, the greater the time difference in the arrival of the P- and S-waves at a seismometer.
Explanation / Answer
A, C and E are correct answers as we know that the speed of P wave is fast as compared to S wave and hence if the travel time of S and P wave is longer then it means that their wave fronts are farther and hence “A” is correct.
We know that in any formation the speed of S wave is almost 60% than that of P wave in the same formation and hence of the S-P value gets smaller as the epicentre is farther and hence “C” is correct.
Similarly difference is larger between arrival of P and S wave as the epicentre is farther and hence “E” is correct.
