Explanation / Answer

a) The given information shows the potential savings in energy, costs, and reduction in CO2 emissions through the use of upgraded technologies in homes. Through the use of upgraded technologies in the home, one can save $294 per year which turns out to be around 20% less than the expenditure on energy in homes with existing energy. While making any decision regarding energy use or future home purchases, this information will make an impact on my decision in many ways. I would happily invest some more money to buy a new house which has been built using emerging technologies so that it will help me in saving more money in a long run.

The above information is helpful even if I am not necessarily buying a house. Lighting techniques alone can help me save $110 per year so I would think of changing some infrastructure or buying some new energy saving lights. Cooling and Hot water are the next biggest contributors which can help me save money, so I would think about changing or renovating them too. All these things not only save money, they also help in saving electricity and most importantly they help in reducing CO2 emissions which is a major threat to our environment these days.

b) The following simple changes in human behavior can help in improving energy costs:

1. Turn heaters, coolers, and lights off when you don't need them.

2. Use energy efficient electrical appliances.

3. Wash your clothes in cold water.

4. Save energy in the kitchen. Use a microwave instead of the electric oven.

5. Shut the doors and curtains of the areas which you are not using. Instead of heating/cooling whole house, do it only in the area you are using.
