Name: Sectioni Date Course: It is a short step from understanding how cooling rate affects gr cool in nature. Three simple though (a) Imagine you have two balls of pizza dough 20 cm in ain size to deriving the basic rules of how magma and lava t experiments will help you understand the cooling process diameter. As shown in the figure on the right, one is rolled out to form a crust 1 cm thick and 50 cm in diameter Both pieces of dough still have the same mass and volume, even though their shapes are very different. Both are baked in a 450°F oven for 20 minutes and removed O Which will cool faster, the large cube or one of the small cubes? Why? Rule 1 of magma cooling: Circle the correct two choices in the following statement. A thin sheet of magma loses heat (faster/ slower) than a blob containing the same amount of magma. This is because the amount of surface area available for cooling in the sheet is (larger/smaller) than the surface area available in a blob of the same volume. to c (b) Equal amounts of hot coffee are poured into thin plastic and Styrofoam cups 0 Which cools faster, the coffee in the plastic cup or in the Styrofoam cup? Hint: Which cup can you hold the longest before burning your fingers?) Explain. (continue OOETING THE COOL ING HISTORIES OF IGNEOUS ROCKSExplanation / Answer
a. The small cube will lose heat faster. This is beacuse the small cube has smaller surface area. The crust will lose heat more slowly on account of its greater surface area- the original dough was rolled out to form a crust with diameter 50 cm. The original dough had a diameter of 20 cm.
A thin sheet of magma loses heat faster than a blob containing the same amount of magma. This is because the amount of surface area available for cooling in the sheet is larger than the surface area available for the blob of the same volume.
b. The coffee in the styrofoam cup loses heat faster than the coffee in the plastic cup. This is because plastic cups are good insulators of heat. An insulator is a material that does not allow heat to pass easily. So, the plastic holds the heat longer than the styrofoam.
