Question

Which diagrams represent Southern Hemisphere skies?

What latitude is represented in diagram c?

What diagram(s) represent(s) a latitude at which the Sun sometimes

passes directly overhead?

What diagram(s) represent(s) a latitude at which the Sun sometimes

remains below the horizon during a full 24 hour period?

Each diagram shows five star circles. Look at the first circle to the north of the celestial equator on each diagram. Can yo u characterize the declination of stars on this circle? If so, what is it? Can you characterize the right ascension of stars on this circle? If so, what is it?

Thank you

Explanation / Answer

Which diagrams represent Southern Hemisphere skies?

In the Southern hemisphere skies, the south celestial pole (SCP) is over the observers head. Therefore, in this case, the diagram b, c and f are representing the southern hemisphere skies.

What latitude is represented in diagram c?

In diagram c, the south celestial pole (SCP) is at an angle of around 67o above the Southern horizon. Therefore the latitude is 67o S.

What diagram(s) represent(s) a latitude at which the Sun sometimes passes directly overhead?

Since the Earth is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees with respect to its orbital motion around the sun, the observer will have the sun passing directly overhead only if he is located at the latitudes between 23.5o N to 23.5o S. Therefore, in this case, only diagram d represents a latitude in that range (equator).

What diagram(s) represent(s) a latitude at which the Sun sometimes remains below the horizon during a full 24 hour period?

Similar to the previous question, the 23.5 degrees tilt of the earth makes the latitudes above 66.5o (90 - 23.5) on both Southern and Northern hemisphere experience complete 24-hour darkness in few months. Therefore, in this case, diagram a, b and c that represent 90o N, 90o S, and 67o S latitudes at which the Sun sometimes remains below the horizon during a full 24 hour period.
