Title of article: Heat loss from Earth's interior triggers ice sheet slide towards the sea
Author: Aarhus University
Summary: In North-East Greenland, researchers have measured the loss of heat that comes up from the interior of the Earth. This enormous area is a geothermal 'hot spot' that melts the ice sheet from below and triggers the sliding of glaciers towards the sea.
This event is connected to the course because it is telling us the process of melting of ice sheets and different models which predict the melting of these polar ice caps of glaciers.
I am personally interested in this event because it will redefine the future. As I have my own interest in the glaciers systems, this study challenges all the old prediction models of melting of glaciers. As seen in the current reserch in this specific area of Greenland the glaciers are melting because of the internal heat of the earth and due to which the ice caps slide more easily over the terrain on which they sit when moving to the sea. The researchers expect that the new discoveries will improve the models of ice sheet dynamics, allowing better predictions of the stability of the Greenland ice sheet, its melting and the resulting global water rise.
