all Verizon c @ * 70% 1:51 PM d21.arizona.edu Part I: Rocks and Minerals: READ THIS FIRST! Refer to the table of chemical symbols and descriptions of mineral groups below Sil s (has Si and O) ferromagnesian (no Fe , no Mg Light Ferromagnesian (Fe and/or Mg) -Dark micSb color, non metallic fe bonCarbonates (has C and must have O also-Often Mg Mognesm fizzes with acid Other (no Si, often a metal, salt or sulfate) 1 (4 Points) a. On the chart below, circle the key components of the chemical formulac for each mineral (no need to cross out the non-key components). b Then determine which mineral group it belongs to and circle it. Pyrite 2 (1Point). Minerals/rocks that are rich in Si, O, Al should be light/dark in color? (Circle one) 3 (1Point). Minerals/rocks that are rich in Fe, Mg should be light/dark in color? (Circle one) Rocks that are light in color are called felsic. Felsic stands for feldspar and silica rich.

Explanation / Answer

I am going to answere from 2nd question as the chart is not clearly visible.

2) Minerals/ Rocks rich in Si O Al are light in colour.

3) Minerals/ Rocks that are rich in Fe Mg are dark in colour.

4) Granite and Rhyolite are Felsic. Gabbro and Basalt are Mafic.

The reason is granite and Rhyolite contains mainly Si and Al, whereas Gabbro and Basalt has more of Fe and Mg.

5) Fe (iron) is more dense than Si(silica).

Density of Fe= 7870 kg/m^3

Density of Si= 1220 kg/m^3

6) Fe is more dense than Al.

Density of Al= 2700 kg/m^3

7) I would agree with student 1. For a compound to fall under carbonate group it must have O along with C. Only then will it fizz in presence of acid, which is a fundamental feature of carbonates.

We were glad to answere this question. Let us know if you have any further queries. Do like the answere if you were satisfied.
