Question
Explain why you agree or disagree with each of the following proposals listed for slowing down emissions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and those for preparing for the effects of global climate change. What effects would carrying out these proposals have on your own lifestyle and those of any great-grandchildren you might have? What might be the effects of not carrying out these actions? Methods for Slowing Down Possible Global Warming:
1. Decrease fossil fuel use (especially coal) in half.
2. Improve energy efficiency.
3. Shift to renewable energy resources.
4. Reduce deforestation.
5. Use sustainable agriculture.
6. Slow population growth.
Explanation / Answer
1. Decreasing the level of use in coal consumption is a better idea because it is a primitive and less efficient source of energy. It must be replaced by hydro or nuclear energy in the upcoming years of development.
2. The energy efficiency must be improved. Since the need of energy per capita is increasing as the new technologies for more convenient and luxurious are introducing in the global world.
3. It will become a needful step in future years. It is a clean energy source and can be produced again and again. thus it must be our primary objective to improve the output levels.
4. About 33% of total land surface must be covered with forest area. thus it must not (atleast )cross this figure.
5. To improve the demand of food and better productivity in agricultural field, it is also a better option.
6. It is not like in one go we should slow down the population growth. Several parameter must incorporate such as total fertility rate, infant mortality rate, life expectancy rate at birth. Several countries have higher fertility rate with low infant mortality and high life expectancy; thus they must think about to reduce the population growth.
