Question

Oceanography questions. Please, only answer if you really know the answers and you can answer ALL of them. Please don't answer it if you don't know the answer or if you cannot complete it. I need in-depth answers!

5. This is a seawall on the Cornish coast of England that is pummeled by waves. You decide to surf the waves that come off the wall. The waves are unpredictable however. Within an hour, some waves are enormous, but other are very small. All the waves coming in are from the same wave train. What is it about the seawall that leads to such different types of waves?

6. You are at the beach at the Outer Banks of NC at low tide, which is at 7 p.m. You talk to a friend who is at the beach on Cape May, NJ who says that high tide there was at 5 p.m. Assuming that there 2 locations are at the same longitude and the ocean basin and topography are not factors, why are the tides at different times? Shouldn’t the tide come in and go out at the same time along the eastern coast of the U.S?

7. The Sellum & Cheatem Real Estate Company wants to sell this waterfront property. They had a groin constructed (black line) and plain to build a cottage at point “X” figuring that the groin will protect that area of the beach. Why do you think about this plan?

Explanation / Answer

5. Generally, walls are steeply inclined fromtop to its bottom, and as the wave approaches the base of the wall it reduces its water column depth and hence to conserve its momentum it enhances its amplitude.

Here its is approaching the wall with some inclined angle with the wave front. and the trough of the surf zone wave has just touches the wall's bottom. thus it continues to come upward with greater elevation to create its crest part of the wave.

6. It may be due to inclined wavefront build up at beach side.

7. The direction of the propagation of the wave front coming from the sea to the beach side is inclined as shown in the figure. Thus, to protect the proposed area as X , it is recommend that it must be located on the lee side of the support structure. The maximum intensity or energy is resisted well by the strucuture.
