Question

After attending this lecture the student should be able to: 1. Describe the differences between an autograft, isograft, allograft, and xenograft 2. Explain the role that MHC antigens play in the process of transplant rejection. 3. Explain the mechanism of hyperacute graft rejection (rejection of transplant due to pre-existing antibodies to grat antigens, ABO blood antigens or HLA antigens). 4. Explain why people possess antibodies to non-self ABO blood type antigens. 5. Explain how the cross-match assay is performed and explain what is learned by performing the assay Understand the mechanism of acute graft rejection. Explain the process of direct alloreactivity 7. Explain how the MLR assay is performed, and explain what is learned by performing the MLR. 8. Explain how antibodies are produced to graft antigens, and explain their role in chronic graft rejection 9. Describe the mechanism of GVHD as it relates to bone marrow transplants. 10. Describe what a minor histocompatibility antigen is, and explain the role that this type of antigen plays in GVHD 11. Understand the importance of MHC matching. 12. Explain the rationale for using anti-rejection drugs that inhibit the activation of T cells. Why is this a logical target? 6. 13. Explain what a humanized monoclonal antibody is
