Question

Please help me, I am deeply confused in this class and trying so hard to understand. Please give detailed answers. I know some of these might be confusing but your help will really help me learn. The teacher requires detailed answers. Thank you sooooooo much, you have no idea.

Also, I am nearly leaglly blind and I am dyslexic so if you could please write clear it would help so much. I just want to learn like everyone else. SUPER SUPER THANK YOU

2. Let's pretend a space probe discovered a new moon orbiting Jupiter, which we'll call MeonX. Much to everyone's surprise, MoonX is found to hold a parallel form of life where the roles we attribute to water (H20) here on Earth are instead performed by liquid hydrogen sufide (H2s). 2A. Through a miracle of modern space technology, the probe is able to send back samples from MonX Unfortunately, the samples in one vial are not in a temperature-controlled environment. The temperature on MoonX averages -70 C and when the researchers look at them under a microscope back on Earth, the cells have been destroyed. Why do you think the cells were destroyed at room temperature (20 C)? How can the differences between the electronegativity of sulfur and oxygen explain why the MoonX cells were destroyed but Earthly cells are stable at room temperature? 3pts)

Explanation / Answer

Points to be considered before going to the answer:

1. Water is the most abundant chemical in all living cells. It is an essential constituent of proptoplasm and it is involved in numerous cellular functions and biochemical reactions. Similarly, cells from the MoonX should have hudrogen sulfide in them

2. At room temperature (20 degrees) , water stays in liquid state but hydrogen sulfide converts into gaseous state. This is because of the difference in electronegativities of sulphur and oxygen.

3. Oxygen is more electronegative than sulphur. So, the bonds between hydrogen and oxygen are stronger and water is in liquid state at room tempetarure.

4. Sulphur being a less electronegative atom, bonds between hydrogen and sulphur are weak and it converts into gas at room temperature.

Considering the above points, when the sample cells from MoonX are brought to earth without maintaning the suitable temperature ( -70 degrees) , the cells could have been destroyed because the hydrogen sulfide present inside the cells is converted into gas and the cells cannot survive.
