Question
This is a more advanced question and so is only worth a fraction of one point. If you can't get it worked out, it won't hurt your score that much. NaCI dissociates into Na and Cl. The total solute concentration (osmolarity) is the sum of all the solute concentrations in a solution. Given the scenario below, in which direction would water move if the membrane was "opened" to allow only water to move (the solutes cannot move)? Left to right or right to left or not at all (net)? Membrane "closed 50 mM KO (MW 74) 10 mM glucose 20 mM sucrose 40 mM glycine O Right to left O Left to right Not at allExplanation / Answer
left side: 50 mM KCl.
KCl dissociates into K+ and Cl-.
therefore, the osmolarity of the left side would be double. 0.05 M + 0.05 M= 0.10 OsM.
right side: none of the solutes would dissociate.
0.01 M + 0.02 M + 0.04 M = 0.07 OsM.
the osmolarity of the left side solution is higher than that of the right side. water moves from low to high osmolarity. therefore, the net movement of water would be right to left.
