Explanation / Answer

3) Le-Chatlier principle is used to predict the effect of changes in conditions on chemical equilibrium.

a) Hyperventilation results in carbon dioxide washout. This decreases the amount of carbonic acid in blood. The blood becomes less acidic and therefore pH of the blood increases.

b) When breath is hold for an extended period of time, the concentration of carbon dioxide in blood increases which in turn gets converted to carbonic acid. This decreases the pH of blood.

c) When excessive amounts of baking soda, HCO3 are ingested, the concentration of OH (hydroxyl) ions increase which raises the alkalinity and pH of blood.

d) Carbonic anhydrase is responsible for urinary acidification and bicarbonate reabsorption. So, inhibiting carbonic anhydrase results in poor reabsorption of bicarbonate. So, alkalinity and the pH of the blood will decrease.
