Question
Question7 [10 marks / 10 minutes] Suppose there are three new eye colo in Drosophila, called utant A, mutant B and mutant C. To find out if these new mutant alleles are in a gene already known to be involved in eye colour, crosses for complementation tests were performed; the new mutants were crossed to nu mutant C mutants in four different genes already known to wildtype control eye colour: scarlet. The results are shown in the table ur mutants mutant A mutant B mutant C mutant A mutant E osy, brown, cinnabar and rosy null brown nul Explain what the complementation results indicate ciabarnull+ about each of the three new mutants: mutant A mutant B and mutant C scarlet null [10 marks) +indicates progeny had wildtype eye phenotype -indicates progeny had mutant eye phenotypeExplanation / Answer
* Mutant A and mutant B completment each other. Therefore, the mutations lies in different genes or different regions
* Mutant C does not complement with any of the other mutations. Even when crossed with the wild type, the mutation shows mutant eye phenotype only. Hence, it can be said as a dominant mutation
* Rosy null and mutation A does not complement, and hence, can be said in the same gene or location
* Cinnabar null and mutant B does not complelent, and hence, can be said in the same gene or location
