Question

1. A long section of The Origin of Species describes the breeding of pigeons and how pigeon breeders have produced many shapes, sizes, and colors of pigeons, all starting from a common wild pigeon. Why did Darwin think this was important?

2. In terms of speciation, how might freshwater streams in a desert be like island in the ocean?

3. Why is large population size a requirement of the Hardy-Weinberg model?

4. Sponges have no muscles and cannot move. They have no nerve cells and cannot sense the environment around them. Why are they considered animals?

5. How is the lifestyle (feeding method, mobility, etc.) of radially symmetrical animals different from that of bilaterally symmetric animals? Provide an example of an animal with each type of symmetry

Please write simply and write the main point to get a point!

Thank you:)

Explanation / Answer

1. Charles Darwin was a part of HMS beagle's second expedition and sailed across the Atlantic ocean and other areas and found many specimens of plants and animals . He considered that the origin of species has relationship with the ancestors because when one species were separated due to some reasons like calamities or geological separation by nature then they tend to acclimatize to that area for example there is a theory stating about the long neck of the giraffe. The offspring of giraffe don't have long necks but the adults have , some theories state that in the process of evolution to obtain the food among the thorns the giraffes tried to stretch their neck and that led to their long neck which ofcourse doesn't have any evidence. The research on the Malayan archipelago also made Darwin to think this is important.

2. Speciation is the process of formation of new species from a single or different ancestors. As there is no use of freshwater streams in the desert i.e the water will be evaporated easily in the desert and can't stay for long time , as well as the islami in a ocean where no relation will be there with the outside world for speciation there need to be connection between various geographical areas and the species must be separated geographically to form new species.

3. Hardy Weinberg law states that in a large random mating population there will be no change in the genotypic frequency from generation to generation where this is not effected by evolutionary forces. For this he stated particularly large population because for a genetic variation the measurement must be taken in a large population because to maintain the population genetic equilibrium the study must be done on a large scale.

4. Although sponges lack the organs , organ systems , muscles they are considered as animals because they are multicellular like animals and also they are heterotrophic and also produce sperm cells and they lack cell wall.

5. Radially symmetrical animals do not move as bilaterally symmetrical animals do. This is useful only for sedentary animals . Bilateral animals have stream lined body that makes them move in the environment. Bilateral animals have sence organs that are accurate and help them survive in the new environment unlike radial animals which don't have sence organs . They have a round mouth which takes food in all directions available and on side fixed to a substratum. You can see all mammals as examples for bilateral animals and for radial symmetry the best exams are jelly fishes , cnidarians.
