1. If you repeated the agar cube experiment using a solution containing a cube experiment using a solution containing a molecule that was twice as large as t NaOH, would you expect the molecule to have diffused into the block more or less than the NaOH? Expla 2. Why did the agar cubes change color when you put them on NaOH? 3. The diameter of a cell is 40pm. You want to a. W make a model of this cell where 1 cm represents 0.5 pm. hat would be the diameter of the model cell? b. How much string would you ned to cut to mak thi el

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1) On using agar cube experiment using a solution containing a molecule that was twice as large as NaOH, let us assume that the agar block contains a pH indicator in form of phenolphthalein which turns pink on reacting with NaOH. The agar cube is semi-permeable membrane and it has gel matrix allowing small molecules to diffuse into it. On adding different concentration of NaOH and it tries to diffuse evenly into block of agar. The surface is permeating and try to get away from molecules still outside the block as it becomes crowded and leaves free space in the agar.

Ans 2) the agar cubes changed its color on putting NaOH as it contained a pH indicator leading to the color changing.
