Table 10.3. Chemical Ranking Based on Class Results. RANK CHEMICAL RANK CHEMICAL Lysol Mouthwash Simple Green Anti. Hand Soap Hand Sanitizer Vinegar Ammonia Bleach 3% Hydrogen Peroxide Lemon Juice Distilled Water CHEMICAL AGENTS FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS 1. Why did we use distilled water as a "test chemical"? It was used as a negative 2. Yes or No. If the distilled water prevented any bacteria from growing, could you accept the rest of your results as valid? Why did we use a pure culture (i.e. one species) of bacteria for this exercise? In other words, why not test several types of bacteria with all ten different types of chemicals?Explanation / Answer
1. Distilled water is used as a negative control. It does not affects the growth of bacteria.
2. No, if water prevents growth of bacteria, then the rest of results become invalid. This suggests that the water in which the chemicals are dissolved has an inhibitory effect on bacterial growth, rather than the chemical itself.
all species of bcteria are not equally sensitive to the same chemical. Some are resistant to inhibition by the above chemicals due to presence of a thick cell wall. If a mixed culture is used, instead of the pure culture, and treated with the test chemical, some bacterial cells will die, whereas other will remain viable and divide normally. this will result in no significant change in the overall growth of the bacteria after treatment with the chemical.
