Discuss five reasons why you should avoid drinking bottled water. And answer why is drinking out of plastic bottles hazardous to your health, contributing to cancer and other diseases? Feel free to do more of your own research to answer this.

Explanation / Answer

Five reasons why we should avoid drinking bottled water are as:

1. They can release harmful chemicals into the drinking water

When we expose plastic bottles to regular wear and tear; heat, i.e., in a hot car, heated fitness class; UV radiation from the sun break down the outer layers of plastic can. In response, plastics can release a chemical called bisphenol A (BPA), while BPA-free plastics can release bisphenol S (BPS). Both of these chemicals, which are also found in the lining of tin cans, and elsewhere in the environment, can contaminate the liquid we drink from our bottle. When we ingest even small amounts of these chemicals, they mimic estrogen, which can change the way our endocrine system functions. In humans, exposure to these chemicals has been linked to chronic diseases, including diabetes, asthma etc.

2. Plastic chemicals make it difficult to conceive

Researchers have found that men and women undergoing in-vitro fertilization who had high levels of BPA in their blood, urine, and work environment were less likely to have a successful pregnancy, these chemicals also interfere with different stages of pregnancy, such as fertilization and implantation.

3. Plastic chemicals can also raise the risk of heart diseases and other cardiovascular diseases

Humans exposed to the highest levels of BPA have an increased risk of heart disease, according to a 2012 study published in Circulation. This could be due to BPA's link to high blood pressure, a risk factor for heart disease. The blood pressure of adults who drank from cans containing BPA rose almost quickly in a small but thorough suggests a study. Exposure to these chemicals could also lead to blood clotting and related complications like heart events and stroke.

4. Refilling plastic bottles can cause various bacterial infections

Cracks in bottles can harbor bacteria, bottles can harbor norovirus-, cold-, and flu-causing bacteria.

5. Plastic bottles are a threat to the environment

Most plastic bottles appear to be recyclable, but since less than 1 percent of plastic is recycled more than once, most ends up in the trash, If this trend continues, a research estimates that there will be more than 26 million pounds of plastic waste in landfills and/or in the environment by 2050.

People have claimed chemicals inside plastics leach into food or drink causing cancer. In particular there have been concerns about Bisphenol A (BPA) and dioxins in plastic bottles or plastic containers

Some of these chemicals have been referred to as ‘endocrine disrupting’ chemicals. This means they can affect how hormones work. Some people have suggested that chemicals in plastic like BPA and dioxins can affect our hormone levels, and that this can cause cancer. But there is no good evidence that this is true.
