Ralph Kramden established Bike World(retailer of bike and parts) in 2001. The company grew to six stores in 2007, and remains at six stores to date. Kramden acts as the general manger of all six stores. Each of the six stores has a store manager and, depending on the size of the store, from two to seven sales people plus bike repair specialists. There are usually two sales people on the floor at any time, but during slow periods only one sales person may be working.
Bike World sales grew rapidly for the first few years, but sales declined as the Great Recession started and have stayed low even though the recession has ended. Kramden can’t determine any single cause of the stagnant sales levels even as the economy has been improving. Bike World has aggressively cut costs to improve profitability, but at this point the only meaningful cost reductions would come from closing stores.
Most employees rely on the Bike World job for all money support, but some have another job in addition to Bike World. When Bike World began, Kramden paid sales people a straight salary of $25,000 to $40,000 depending on sales experience. Annual bonuses up to $10,000 could be earned if the sales person met an annual quota. As all Bike World employees are riding enthusiasts, the employee discount on all items in stock is a nice perk. In an effort to increase sales and profits, Kramden decided to drop the salary plan and shifted all sales people to a straight commission basis. Sales people have a “draw” feature and are able to borrow on future commission earnings. This plan has been in place for three years, but sales and profits have not grown as hoped.One recent trend is the number of new hires who draw on their commissions and then quit to eliminate their debt to Bike World
Kramden has recently considered Bike World’s business goals. First, and most important, is increasing sales revenue. Second is customer satisfaction and loyalty. Third is increasing sales of specific, high margin, product lines. Fourth is encouraging community involvement in biking events.

Compensation problem(s) to be resolved:
1. Increase sales-
Primary focus should be on increasing the sales which is proportional to profits and revenue of the store. If the store yields good revenue, employee can be given attractive pay which increases the employment satisfaction.
However, in order to increase sales, employee should be encouraged with various incentive structure
2. Attractive incentive structure and Bonus-
As the company is at stake, pay should be minimized. However, based on quaterly or annual sales bonus card should be attractive
Relevant stakeholders and their viewpoints:
1. Employees-
Stakeholders are the employees whose pay structure gets revised as per store's requirements. Any person would be willing to earn well. When a person's pay get reduced, he will not be willing to work. This might think him/her to resign from the job too.
On the other hand, there might be some employees who want to support the store. However, these candidates expect some good bonus upon good sales.
2. Dealers-
Dealers might also be impacted as the payment will be delayed from the store because of low profits. Dealers might not be willing to give the products to the store in credit.
Factors which help the store manager increase sales and profits:
1. Advertising:
Advertising plays a prominent role in attracting the customers to buy the product. Awareness should be given to the public about the product. If there is no good revenue, employee themselves should start advertising the products.
Distributing the pamphlets is one of the cheapest advertising in near by areas. However, using advertising using social media like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube will have good response and no cost is involved.
2. Offers:
People are likely to get attracted to offers. In order to increase sales, one should run a offer campaign. This will definitely help to avoid loss even if we do not find great profits.
An offer can be implemented as if a A buys a product and if any of his friend or relative say B buys the product with A's reference, then A should be given some discount which will be credited to A's account later
This will increase the interest among customers and increase the sale eventually.
Make a recommendation to the sales manager:
Sales manager should work on various ideas which lead to increase in sales. He/She should implement various ideas which benefit sales persons so that they will be willing to sale more.
