Question
During your summer research internship, you must determine the linkage of three different genes in Drosophila. You find that the mutant alleles are v (vermilion eyes), cv (crossveinless, or absence of a crossvein on the wing), and ct (cut, or snipped, wing edges). You are given parental stocks in which the females are homozygous doubly recessive flies of genotype v+/v+ · cv/cv · ct/ct and the males are homozygous singly recessive flies of genotype v/v · cv+/cv+ · ct+/ct+. From this cross, triply heterozygous progeny of genotype v/v+ · cv/cv+ · ct/ct+ are obtained, and females of this genotype are testcrossed to triple recessives of genotype v/v · cv/cv · ct/ct. You obtain and phenotype the following progeny from this cross.
1. What are the parental input genotypes for the triple heterozygotes? In other words, which alleles were linked together in gametes from the F1 females (the mothers)? How did you determine this? 2 pts.
2. Now determine the order of the three alleles. You must explain your logic or show your work below to receive credit. 2 pts
3. You have been told that the v and cv loci are the furthest apart. To start constructing the map of your genes, you first decide to determine the recombination frequencies of the v and cv loci. To get the total number of recombinants, add together the number of progeny that exhibit the four recombinant phenotypes for just the v versus cv loci. Show your calculations and write your RF below as a percentage. 2 pts.
