Question

Salivary amylase and pancreatic amylase play very similar roles in breaking down carbohydrates in food. Which of the following offers the most reasonable explanation for why humans need both enzymes?:

(A) Salivary amylase rapidly digests starch, whereas the pancreatic amylase rapidly digests cellulose.

(B) Salivary amylase is inactivated in the stomach due to low pH and further carbohydrate digestion is required in the small intestine.

(C) Salivary amylase is only functionally active in combination with the mechanical action of chewing, whereas pancreatic amylase is much more versatile.

(D) Salivary amylase and pancreatic amylase are remnants of evolution from other primates.

Explanation / Answer

Answer is B

Salivary amylase enzymes work best in Neutral pH. it work on Raw Carbohydare but can partially digest and form Dextrose. when food mixed with salivary amylase enters into stomach due to lower ph it gets inactivatd. so Pancreatic amylase work best for those carbohydrate that requires long duration for digestion in optimum pH (Basic pH)

A is not correct as human can't digest cellulose. cellulase is required for cellolose digestion. C is not so true as enzymatic action is not associated with mechanial chewing by teeth
