Question

14. The following table shows the results of a complementation test for eye color mutations in Drosophila. Different mutas strains were crossed to determine if the offspring (FI generation) could grow (+) or not -). A) How many genes ai le involved and which mutations are in the same gene? B) Assuming phenotypes no recombination takes place, what are the possible of the F2 generation that result from crossing the offspring of the vermillion and carnation mutant strains? Show the chromosomal configuration of this F2 generation. Mutation white garnet ruby vermilion chery coral apricot buff carnation white garnet ru vermillion coral apricot buff carnation

Explanation / Answer

A) Complementation will occur only if the mutations are in different genes. It does not occur if mutations are in the same gene. Two genes are involved in the mutations occured in white with garnet, ruby, vermillion, coral, and carnation. One gene is involved when gene white with cherry, apricot and buff. Two genes garnet to ruby, vermillion and genes next to them. The mutation between ruby to vermillion, cherry and other genes next to them two genes are involved. And vermillion to cherry and genes next to them two genes are involved. Cherry to coral and carnation two genes and involved and cherry to apricot and buff one gene is involved. Coral to apricot and rest of the genes two genes are involved. Buff two genes involved with carnation.

The mutations that are on the same genes do not show complementation which is indicated by - eventhough two genes are involved. Hence all the genes have undergone mutations on their same gene.

B) When the carnation gene is crossed with other genes the phenotypes of the F2 generation shows all the 9 possible phenotypes from the genes. When vermillion is crossed the genes of cherry, coral, apricot, buff and carnation are expressed and only those phenotypes are observed.
