Question
There are two type of adipose tissue: 1) white adipose tissue (WAT) and 2) brown adipose tissue (BAT). BAT is rich in mitochondria containing uncoupling protein (UCP-1), which allows the generation of heat by bypassing the usual ATP synthesis with the influx of protons in mitochondria. The presence of BAT is also known to promote insulin sensitivity while on the other hand, WAT may lead to insulin resistance. Individuals often have proportionately less BAT/more WAT are likely to be obese. Give two reasons why this fact makes sense.
Explanation / Answer
