Question
1. Answer the following questions about embryonic stem cells:
a. Explain how embryonic stem cells can be produced using in vitro fertilization (start with a sperm donor and an egg donor)
b. When and from where would the embryonic stem cells be isolated from the embryo?
c. Why are embryonic stem cells a better choice for therapy than adult stem cells? Embryonic stem cells produce more cell types than the adult stem cells can produce.
d. What would have to be known to produce heart cells from the embryonic stem cells?

Explanation / Answer
1 a. Stem cells are the cells which have the power to divide and transformed into organ or body part. Stem cells are generally derived from embryo produced in vitro by fusion of egg derived from donor mother and sperm derived from donor father. These gametes are fertilised in vitro to produce the embryo and embryonic stem cells are derived from it.
b. Embryonic stem cells are derived from blastocyst and blastocyst are one week old embryos. At this stage they have nearly 100 cells.
c. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent and can give rise to several types of organ and structure but adult stem cells have only limited ability to differentiate into structure of their origin.
d. Embryonic stem cells are under research for to be used in production of heart cells. They shows beating on culture media but are under investigation for transplant into heart and functioning properties into heart.
