Question
1. Answer the following questions about lumbar punctures: a) What is the purpose of a lumbar puncture (What is being sampled and why is this Wisrsprehrough to ge towhere you need to be to procedure performed)? perform a lumbar puncture? Begin with the space outside the most superficial meninges layer of the spinal cord. Go in order from most superficial to deep (as the needle would be inserted). Clearly distinguish between meninges and spaces in your answer by including FULL names (yes, spelling counts!). Include ONLY those spaces that are considered real spaces, not potential ones.Explanation / Answer
1.a) Lumbar puncture is a technique which involves inserting a needle into the spinal cord in order to collect Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for diagnostic testing. Lumbar puncture is usually performed to diagnose diseases of the Central nervous system such as meningitis, encephalitis and sub arachnoid haemorrhage.
b) The lumbar puncture is performed by inserting a needle between the lumbar vertebrae L3 and L4 till it enters the lumbar cistern where the ligamentum flavum is housed. The needle then enters the epidural space, then the needle passes through the dura mater. Once the needle pierces through the dura mater, it also passes through the arachnoid memebrane because the dura mater and the arachnoid membrane are in close contact with each other. The needle then enters the subarachnoid space. Drops of cerebrospinal fluid are then collected.
