Question
• A cover memo from you (the manager of training) to your boss (the director of human resources) that describes why an on boarding program for new consultants will address problems in the organizations. Such as ; turnover of business consultants at your company is at an all-time high. The cost of recruiting, hiring, and developing consultants who resign within six months is negatively affecting the company’s bottom line. In addition, clients are beginning to complain about having to get used to a new consultant every six months or so and several have threatened to take their business to another firm.
Explanation / Answer
In general onboarding of any new employee is to get him totally acclamatised and attuned to the organisation, with positive vibes . It is more than mere orientation ,which is aimed at his getting familiar to that part of his job and whatever concerns that--which is normally for a shorter duration like a week. whereas, onboarding of new entrants is a strategic decision of the top management, in which almost all the senior and policy-decision making officers are involved to brief them of the bigger organisational goal and that which is expected of the new entrants. This is not a one-time event ,but a process, lasting for even a year. But the benefits are mani-fold. As the saying goes," first impression is the best impression"--- the aim of this onboarding exercise is to create enormous good impression in the mind of the new entrant ,so that he will feel that he has landed a coveted position ,from where he can try-out all his ambitions ,by integrating his personal growth with the organisational goal.So he will not think about quitting but progressing. That way, company gets to save on repeated recruitment & training procedures --both time & money, that are unproductive and to no one's good. Onboarding is an interactive exercise ,in that the new recruits are able to come face to face with the who-is-who of the company , and they take pride in clearing their doubts , from whom they are going to travel with ,for the rest of their stay in the organisation. Thus efforts of time and money spent on this process ,saves the company many aviodable costs towards repeated recruitments ,training and development. Also, there is less of employee -turnover,as those who come in, are satisfied and decide to stay-on.They start contributing positively to the company, at a comparatively lesser time. There is definitely a telling favourable effect on both the company's income &expenses and hence the profits. Also, outsiders with whom the new employee interacts, have a continuity ,and need not explain their matters again & again , everytime , an employee leaves the organisation, that too, within short intervals. In light of the above, I suggest we try out an onboarding program for our newly recruited business consultants and study its effects on employee-turnover as well as costs involved.
