Question

22. The blending-inheritance hypothesis proposed that the genetic material from parents is unavoidably and irreversibly mixed in the offspring. As a result, offspring and later descendants should always appear intermediate in phenotype to their forebears. Mendel, in contrast, proposed that genes are discrete and that their integrity is maintained in the offspring and in subsequent generations. Suppose the year is 1890. You are a horse breeder and have just read Mendel's paper. You don't believe his results,

Explanation / Answer

22.ANS: Blending -inheritance hypothesis: The blending-inheritance hypothesis explains that the genetic materials from parents are necessary and mixed irreversibly in the offspring. The results in the offspring are descendants that appear intermediate in phenotype to forebears.

In contrast Mendel has proposed that the offspring of the subsequent generation, the genes are discrete and the integrity is continued. For instance if a horse breeder has believed in Mendel's work but do not believe in his results. He has worked with cremello (very light-colored) and chestnut (reddish-brown) horses.

In addition, if a cross between both the individual's cremello and chestnut of pure breeding line, the off spring obtained is palomino. Palomino is an intermediate, which is golden-yellow in color.

The crosses, offspring genotype, and phenotype obtained are as follows:

1. According to the model of Mendel, the individuals of palomino are found to he heterozygous at locus, for coat color.

2. If palomino individuals are mated, the combination of offspring is chestnut, cremello, and

palomino

3 In addition, all the offspring will be palomino, if blending inheritance has occurred.
