BIO211 ONP1 Spring 2018 Due date Aprilh: Monday, Study Guide Chapter 3 What is Transcription? 2. What is translation? 3. What is the role of mRNA, rRNA, and tRNA during translation What is the function of ribosomes? . Which enzyme catalyzes the transcription? 6 A DNA molecule has two strands (double helix)-how many of its strands are/is used during reolication and transcription? 7. What is the difference between transcription and translation occurring in Prokaryotes and eukaryotes? s. What is the relation between mRNA and genetic code?

Explanation / Answer

1. Transcription is the process of synthesis of single stranded mRNA from the DNA.

2. Translation is the process of synthesis of protein by processing of mRNA in translation machinery.

3. mRNA carries the information from the DNA and information for protein synthesis is encoded in mRNA. rRNA are the RNA molecules which are involved in construction of Ribosome and which is involved in protein synthesis. tRNA is the adapter molecule and adds the Amino Acids according the sequence of codon on mRNA.

4. Ribosomes have two subunuts -

a. Smaller subunit and larger subunit

Both subunits are assembled when protein is to synthesize and allow site for attachment of mRNA and also site for tRNA.

5. RNA polymerase are the enzymes which uses DNA as template and syntesize single stranded mRNA.

6. During replication both strand are used for DNA synthesis and two daughter molecule are produced containing both one as perental strand and one as new strand synthesized. And in transcription only one strand is used for mRNA synthesis.

7. In prokaryotes transcription and translation are coupled but in eukaryotes mRNA undergo post transcription processing and then translated.

8. Genetic code is combination of ribonucleotide on mRNA which codes for an amino acid. Genetic code is composed of triplet of ribonucleotide.
