1) A callus is part of skin that is formed by friction by bottom of off tans sole of shoe or it can be formed by pressure created on part of foot. This can because by due improper fitting shoes or due extra growth of muscles etc. In the callus the outermost layer stratum corneum gets deposited with layer of dead skin cells and upon removal of superficial layer of callus no pain is experience or bleeding is seen.

2) The callus causes the build of layers dead cells and when we file or remove the dead cells we may reach the layer of active living cells by which we might experience pain or even bleed on removal on callus.
