Question

to reinforce a smockstack, an extenal "strake or spiraling strip is attached as shown in fingure 1 below. The strake is fabbricated in section from flat steel before being bent and welded to the smokestake. The problem is to determine the correct inner radius of the strake piecse to allow them to fit the smokestack.(see fig 2)

referring to fig 3, first determine a parametric representation for the helical path on which the strake attaches to the smokestack, now compute the reqired radius r as shown in fig2. Is this radius constant?

My question is :

1. how to calculate r

2. How many strake segments per loop?

3. Angle of attachment?

Note:fig 2: inside radius is r . Small dimesion outside is 8"

fig3: a= 3.75" heigh h=31.5"

This is my Dynamic class. We use R.C Hibbeler author. And this problem refer in chapter 12
