Explanation / Answer

The notion of correctness refers to exactly how accurate the information reported is in the context in which the reporting is done. Credibility refers to the trustworthiness of the information. The thumbrule is the more correct the information, the more credible it is. Conformity to fact and being free from any error defines the "correctness" aspect of information.

As an employee of a leading telecom company, mail communication was used constantly. The following example would demonstrate correctness which influenced credibility:

The auditor of the company quoted on mail that" 30% of the open purchase orders of the company have not been provided for and that the company is understating it's liability".This information was grossly incorrect as all the purchase orders referred to by the auditor had already been provided for during the prior year closing. Since, the bills had not been raised when the audit was conducted, the purchase orders remained open. However, the company has in no way undertstated its liability. On reading this e-mail, the auditor's findings were termed as incredible due to the lack of backing by factual evidence which resulted in it being incorrect.

The ways to ensure correctness and credibility are as follows:

- Any data reported should be adequately researched and backed up by facts.

- There should never be any guesswork involved.

-Credibility is bulit over time. Thus, one should constantly endeavour to provide correct information.

*Please note that the example quoted has been cited using personal experience.
