Question

Before the mid- 1970s, systems programmers and businesspeople (including accountants) did not communicate well with one another. The programmers were criticized for using too much jargon, and the business-people were criticized for not adequately expressing their needs. Efforts have been made to overcome this communication gap, but room for improvement still exists. What problems do you think resulted from this communication gap? What do you think you can do to help close the gap even more when you enter the workforce?

Explanation / Answer

The main problem that arises with communication gap is that requirements of the service provider and the service recipient are not properly understood by each other. The business people do not mention their requirements clearly to the programmers. The programmers also do not communicate the programme specifications to the business people clearly. This absence of clarity leads to a gap between what is expected and what is delivered. The his gap can only be closed by improving communications both spoken and written. Requirements of all concerned should be absolutely clear in both discussions and written contracts which should be well drafted.
