Question
Before solving a Newton's Law problem you must draw a proper free body diagram. What are all the required steps in drawing a free body diagram? (It is NOT all of them)
Draw a x-y coordinate system.
Clearly label the x and y axes.
Clearly define the positive directions for both axes.
Draw all physical forces that act on the object (mass) of interest.
Draw all forces that the object (mass) of interest exerts on other objects.
Draw all angles where they are needed to find the components of forces.
Draw the components of all forces that are not along one of the axes.
1.Draw a x-y coordinate system.
2.Clearly label the x and y axes.
3.Clearly define the positive directions for both axes.
4.Draw all physical forces that act on the object (mass) of interest.
5.Draw all forces that the object (mass) of interest exerts on other objects.
6.Draw all angles where they are needed to find the components of forces.
7.Draw the components of all forces that are not along one of the axes.
Explanation / Answer
The free body diagram should be done in the given way systematically and stepwise manner except the step number five. You need not bother about those forces which the object (our point of interest of FBD) exerts on other bodies. Only one needs to take care of the forces acting on our body(the body for which we want to draw the free body diagram). After resolution of the forces along the chosen X and Y axes, equate all the forces on each directions (X and Y directions) to zero. On equating the summation of forces along X axis to zero and Y axis to zero , one can easily find out the unknowns that one wants to deal with.
