Question

Before going on vacation for a week, you ask your friend to water your ailing plant. Without water, the plant has a 90 percent of chance of dying. Even with proper watering, it has a 20 percent chance of dying. And the probability that your friend will forget to water it is 30 percent. What is the chance that your plant will survive the week? If it is dead when you return, what is the chance that your friend forgot to water it? If your friend forgot to water it, what is the chance that it will be dead when you return?

Explanation / Answer

with out water the probablity of dying a plant is 9/10

proper watering the probabilty of dying a plant is 2/10

proper watering the probabilty of growing a plant is 8/10

friend will forget to water it is 3/10

friend will remember t0 water it is 7/10

1. chance that plant will survive is : (7/10) * (8/10) = 56%

2. if it is dead, the probability of the friend forget to water it:

here we need to take another value .......

the chance that plant will dead if proper watering (7/10) *(2/10) = 14%

total probability is 100

if it is dead, the probability of the friend forget to water it is 100-(56+14) = 30%

3. if friend forget to water it, and the chance that it will be dead when you return is 90%
