Question
How would the unemployment rate change if we counted "disouraged workers" as unemployed?
A. The unemployment rate would decrease
B. The unemployment rate would double
C. The unemployment rate would not change
D. The unemployment rate would increase by about 0.3 percent
Obviously the answer is either B or D. The figures in my book are dated August 2008, with a US population of 301.1 million people. I'm just having trouble finding current information to project how much of a difference the unemployment rate would have actually been with those additional people at that time.
Explanation / Answer
D. The unemployment rate would increase by about 0.3 percent..
You don't need the actual data to validate this..The number of discouraged people cannot be more than that..It's the rarest of the rare case that it would double..So we can blindly go with D
