Question

answer the questions about the following scenario: Cart A runs into cart B and bounces back.

How does the final momentum of the cart B compare to the initial momentum of cart A?

How does the final kinetic energy of cart B compare to the initial kinetic energy of cart B?

In this simulation you are able to adjust the spring constant of spring #3. By using the ruler to measure how much a particular mass stretches spring #3 determine the spring constant of this spring when it is at:

the softest setting

the hardest setting.

Explanation / Answer

1) Spring setting hard, mass = 250g
Spring length = 35 cm
Natural length = 30 cm
   Change in length = 5cm = .05m
   Force applied = mg = (250 g )(9.8) = (.25)(9.8) = 2.45N
   Since, F = kx => k = F/x = 2.45/.05 = 49 N/m
2) Spring setting soft, mass = 50g
Spring length = 35 cm
Natural length = 56 cm
   Change in length = 21cm = .21m
   Force applied = mg = (50 g )(9.8) = (.05)(9.8) = .49N
   Since, F = kx => k = F/x = .49/.21 = 2.33 N/m
