Nurses who is first level care providers has to deal with culturally diverse group of people. According to the code of nursing ethics, a nursing personnel should adapt the culture and beliefs of her client and should deliver services irrespective of these diversities. This diversity of culture brings a lot of barriers in rendering services as communication is the biggest asset of this field. The language barriers often tend to place some clients at risk of negative care experiences.
Nurses are responsible for creating a therapeutic environment by creating a comfort for the patient. There should be a good mutual understanding among clients and nurses and this is where communication becomes important. During a face to face interaction with clients the communication barriers often found among the culturally diverse are:
1) Language barrier is most crucial to overcome. This leads to misinterpretation of the orders given to patients. The words used in communication many have different meaning in different culture which may develop failure for the care providers to understand needs and concerns of the clients and on other hand client fails to understand what is being explained by the care provider to them.
2) The body language and other behavior can also cause miscommunications. Ex: eye contact during a face to face contact is important in U.S but in countries eye contact is considered to a sign od disrespect or challenge to authority.
3) During face to face interaction, different gestures are have different meaning. For example: nodding head from side to side is considered as sign of agreement among some cultures whereas its considered as sign of disagreement by other culture.
It is very essential to overcome these barriers for delivering a quality care to the clients and to develop a mutual trust and understanding among the client and care provider. For this a following measures can be adopted.
