Question
Some of die first multicellular plant forms to appear on earth were the blue-green bacteria and algae. Obtain a prepared slide of Spirogyra, a filamentous alga. Study it at low power to get an idea of the size of the filaments. Now switch to high power to determine the size the individual cells in the filaments. Observe and sketch the cells, paying attention to internal Figure 2-2. The filamentous alga, Spirogyra. Hey. This is really based on measurements you should have collected in lab. That being said, we can estimate what a number that should be in the acceptable range of what your professor expected you to measure. Magnification=400x (or 40x if you have not been taught to multiply by 10x for the ocular lens) Spirogyra are usually measured at 40x on a compound light microscope. 100x only if you had an oil immersion lens available to you. (Anything smaller, such as 4x or 10x, probably wouldn't have given you much detail, so it's safe to assume you would have used 40x for this.) These numbers refer to the magnification of the objective lens, and you multiply by the 10x for the ocular lens to get the total magnification. Cell length=22 um (randomly picked number between 10 and 100um) *They are 10-100 um in length. Pick any number in between 10 and 100um and you should be safe. Notable features: -long filament shape -cells are end-to-end -spiral shaped chloroplasts -green overall color -cell walls are faint/barely visible between adjacent cells
