Question
There was an item on the news tonight about a rental scam in Nassau County. It appears that scammers are taking over zombie (empty) houses and renting them out.
How would you advise a client to protect themselves from giving up the money they've saved to be able to rent a house to a scammer? Once it becomes known the victim renters are evicted, by the outny or legal owner, and lose their deposit and security fees.
On a similar front, last week one of the news stations did a story on 'deed' fraud'. What s deed fraud and how would you recommend a client protect themsselves?
Explanation / Answer
Our advice to the client wil be :
Deed Fraud
Deed fraud may arise because of a person not having the absolute ownership enters the rental agreement. So it is adviseable to check for the background of the landlord.
