Weight of the women matters when it comes to conception. There is difficulty getting pregnant if the woman is underweight, at a normal weight but athletic and very muscular and obese. Obesity is one of the leading cause for infertility in women. But the reason of weight gain is not only because of physical factors but also due to hormonal imbalances.
Fat cells play an important role in reproductive hormone production. Fat cells store sex hormones, like estrogen (the “female” hormone, but it’s also in men) and testosterone (the “male” hormone, which is also in women.) If you have excess fat cells, you’ll also have excess storage of these hormones.
For women who are overweight, their fat cells produce estriol, which is a weak estrogen. This leads to having too much circulating estrogen. In overweight or obese women, the excess estrogen levels eventually lead the reproductive system to shut down.
A normal BMI is considered to be between 18.5 to 24.9. Anything over 25 is considered to be overweight, and a BMI over 30 is defined as obese. This is an important time to mention that BMI is not always the best measure of your overall health. It’s not even the best way to measure whether you’re carrying too much or too little fat on your body. The optimal BMI range for health and fertility is 18.5-24.9 kg/m2. If your weight for height (BMI) is outside this range, your chances of pregnancy are lower. Because high BMI is a more common problem than low BMI. Weight loss of even 5 to 10 percent of body weight will increase fertility.
