Explanation / Answer

1). Dietary supplements are sometimes suggested by the physicians but often chosen by the normal healthy adults and elderly people to improve their health. They are also preferred by the athletes and those who are undergoing weight reduction programmes. However, the physicians and the recent research studies do not support the idea of health improvement by taking dietary supplements. Dietary supplements can be inefficient or sometimes may produce toxic effects particularly when taken in excessive amounts. For example, the excessive intake of vitamin A increases the risk of osteoporosis, which is evidenced by the high incidence of osteoporosis in northern Europe people, who take unusual high amounts of vitamin A than the recommended doses.

The results of research studies are indicating that the dietary supplements may produce beneficial effects only in those with specific deficiency. People without deficiency of any element are not suggested to take dietary supplements as they increase the risk of certain diseases or health conditions. Physicians suggest that taking balanced diet always results in positive health outcomes rather choosing the dietary supplements in normal people.
