1)Overdose of percodan can cause serious side effects as it has aspirin which is anti platelet which can cause severe hemorrhage and leukopenia. It is extremely important to let her physician know this is dangerous and can cost her life over prolonged use.
2) Explain to her regarding the dangerous side effects and let her know that you will report to her physician as this can instil some amount of fear and caution. Ask her why does she need so much of medicine and assess for any problems or whether she is just addicted.
3)Some important ways to prevent such abuse:
a)Physicians should make a note when patients come multiple times for same medicine or for untimely refills.
b) Should make appropriate note on drugs which have addiction and use drug monitoring systems available which tracks the patients consumption of such medicines.
c) Should strictly discourage use of such medicines if the patients are asking for the drug alone.
d)Should ask for a family member who can provide details of the patient and his /her medicines.
